Bradenton’s motto is: “The Friendly City”. Bradenton is named after Dr. Joseph Braden. William I. Turner would buy 7 acres in 1877 and created a subdivision from that land creating what is now Bradenton. Bradenton would be incorporated on May 19, 1903.
A settlement established by Maroons or escaped slaves named Angola existed in Bradenton’s present area starting in the late 1700s and ending in 1821.
Angola was a prosperous Maroon community along the Manatee River in Bradenton, Florida. In 1821, acting under orders, Creek Indians destroyed Angola and it was “burned to the ground”. The result of the raid was “terror” all over Florida and all the Blacks who could, left for the Bahamas.
The city of Bradentown was incorporated in 1903. The name “Bradentown” removed the ‘w” in January 1925 and it was completed on May 2, 1925 to become Bradenton.
In July 2018, the first “Back to Angola Festival” was held at the Manatee Mineral Springs Park, a large neighborhood park located in Bradenton, Florida. Descendants of those who had escaped to The Bahamas in 1821 attended.
